This September, Mike Splaine will be the featured speaker atDementia 2018: Research, Implement, Improve in Bangalore, India. Sponsored by NMT Eldercare, Nightingales Medical Trust, and the Bangalore Chapter of the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India, Mike will join experts and stakeholders committed to improving life for persons with dementia and their families. A major goal of the conference, and one that’s particularly germane to Splaine Consulting? Finalizing and submitting a National Dementia Strategy to the Indian government. ADI and Karolinska Institutet Release Global Estimates of Care Report
An update to the 2015 World Alzheimer Report, the primary aims of this newly released one are as follows:
- presenting global estimates of informal care hours,
- comparing the global distribution of caregiver time estimates with that of costs, and
- highlighting gender patterns.
The report estimates the annual global number of informal care hours provided to people with dementia living at home was about 82 billion hours in 2015, equating to 2,089 hours per year or 6 hours per day. This is the equivalent of more than 40 million full-time workers in 2015, a figure that will increase to 65 million full-time workers by 2030. An estimate of annual global costs in 2015 totaled $818 billion USD; currently, the report suggests the annual global costs have surpassed $1 trillion USD. Read the entire report here.

Film Tackles Alzheimer’s Stigma in Asian Communities
In her unique and powerful documentary, Trang Tu, an advocate for Asian funding and Alzheimer’s awareness in the community, shares her experiences as a full-time caregiver to her mother, who lives with Alzheimer’s. Although mental and neurological diseases are a global health issue — and one which affects millions of Asians — a word does not exist in their culture to describe the disease. In GAPS, Tu explores the lack of awareness of mental disease in the Asian community, what contributes to the shame and embarrassment surrounding these issues, and more. Watch it here.
ABA Commission on Law & Aging Releases New Guardianship Report
The American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging has recently published a new legislative fact sheet,Guardianship and the Right to Visitation, Communication, and Interaction, which offers assistance to lawyers, bar associations, allied professionals, legislative staff, and advocates to make policy recommendations, improve practice, and raise professional awareness about visitation and guardianship.
