Aging in Place’ State Ranking

A recent study by Seniorly, highlighted in ConsumerAffairs, ranks U.S. states based on how well they support “aging in place” – enabling seniors to live safely and independently in their own homes. Utah was ranked the top state, thanks to its strong home health care services, affordable living, and access to community resources, while Florida—despite its large retiree population—placed poorly due to high housing and care costs coupled with limited caregiver availability.

How High Is Your Dementia Risk? It Might Depend
on Where You Live

UC San Francisco researchers have found that dementia risk in the U.S. varies significantly by region, with rates 25% higher in the Southeast versus the Mid‑Atlantic baseline, 23% higher in the Northwest and Rocky Mountains, 18% higher in the South, and about 13% higher in the Southwest (including California), while the Northeast saw a modest 7% increase. These disparities persisted even after adjusting for variables such as age, race, cardiovascular disease, and rural versus urban residence. The authors emphasize the importance of regionspecific prevention strategies and plan to investigate underlying contributors ranging from educational quality to early life conditions and environmental exposures – to better understand and address these geographic risk patterns.
